Week 3 - Technology in the Classroom

I hope you guys enjoyed your week off of class.  I had a nice time at the conference at Jefferson City.  We learned ways to help students be successful on the Praxis test (the certification test you will all take before you are allowed to student teach.)

You're homework for this week is just as it states on your syllabus.  Please read Chapter 2 in your textbook and write 3 things new that you learned through the reading.  Write at least 3 sentences for each response, making a total of at least 9 sentences.

You will also continue blogging this week.  I hope you are able to watch youtubes from the computer you are using, because it is crucial that you watch the videos in order to respond to the blog.

Watch the Technology youtubes on the side. Reflect upon what you saw. What are your thoughts about technology in the classroom? How could the Amazon Kindle change typical textbooks in the future? Please share an example of how a teacher effectively or ineffectively utilized technology in the classroom.

  1. I thought the videos on the Smartboard were so interesting. They really made me want to use them when I start teaching because there is so many ways to use them. I think it will be a while before the Kindle product becomes very popular because of how expensive it is, and I don't know how useful it is going to be in the classroom for that same reason. There wasn't many ways that I have used technology in the classroom in the past, my highschool only had a few Smartboards and the teachers barely knew how to use them. They were used the most to show things on the internet and work on grammer in English.

  2. I think the videos were very interesting. The smartboards can have so much use as long the intructors know how to use them effectively to engage the students. Technology has gotten bigger every year will younger students, and I think by bringing that to the classroom they can be involved and want to be involved. The Kindle, pricey but I can see in the future maybe having them in classrooms. I don't see them being used as much in grade school but i can see them being used in colleges, so students dont have multiple books to carry around and remembering the Kindle compared to 3 or 4 books for one class could be easier; every located in one place.

  3. Jaclyn,
I agree with you that seeing the smartboards in use on the videos made me want to try it out. My high school as well had smartboards but the teachers did not know how to actually do anything with it. Sometimes technology for some is not easy to learn. And in some areas the old traditional paper and pencil can be more effective than technology, just not as exciting to the students.

  4. I went to a high school where only projectors were used, but I was always jealous of the schools that had smart-boards. Having a smart-board can come into use and sometimes it may not always be worth using in the classroom. You can do so much with a smart-board, like move the globe around on Google Earth and transfer students work onto the board for everyone to see. One teacher talked about how easy it is for special ed students to use. They can look at a big projection instead of paper, because following along may be difficult for them. I think smart-boards can be effective as long as the teacher is using them for the right lessons. The "Clicker" is interesting. My neighbor has one and she absolutely loves it. She said it is easier to get in class work done and even to take test and quizzes, and attendance. The Amazon Kindle may come into play when we have kids. Right now, just like phones, there are problems with it, and one day it will be perfected and most schools will use them. I believe that colleges may start using them first. I had one teacher who ineffectively used technology. She put her whole lesson on a powerpoint, and she read word for word and after she read everything on the slide she was done talking and did not go into more detail. The slides were very very long. If I am going to use a powerpoint in my classroom, I will put key words on there depending on the grade level.

  5. Andrea,
I agree with you! If a teacher is going to use a smartboard or any technology, they need to know how to work it and know how to engage the students to follow along. Even students now bring laptops to class and just use facebook and the internet. Teachers should tell students to put them away. I do agree with the kindle instead of lugging around 3 to 4 books everyday. It is something you can throw in your bag and go to where ever. They are also good for flying and road trips. It will be the next thing to have next to a cell phone, ipod, and laptop.

  6. Andrea,
I agree that the teachers should definately learn how to use the smartboards effectivly because they're a great learning tool. I think its a great idea to have them in college I didn't even think of that, it would be so much easier than trying to find all the books and get them in time and way easier to bring to class.

  7. I think that having smartboards in the classrooms are very effective. It helps the teacher find different ways to teach their children and it encourages student involvement in the classroom. It is also very critical for the teacher to know how to use this type of technology because there are so many different things you can do with a smartbord and it will benifit the students to get all that the smartboards have to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  8. To me technology in the classroom can actively engage the students. Instead of the students just listening to the teacher talk and the students falling asleep, they can be working on the smartboard. If my teachers used this type of technology while I was in school I probably would have payed more attention and learned so much more.
The Amazon Kindle could change schools in the future. No more buying numerous textbooks and having all these old textbooks to get rid of. Once the price of the Amazon Kindle goes down schools could purchase this product for the students. There would be no excuse for a student to forget their books. It would also help many college students, because they wouldn't have to spend hundreds of dollars on books.
I think a teacher has to really be spot on using this type of technology. I noticed that some teachers were going to fast and were all over the place on the smartboard. Another concern is that the students don't know how to use this equipment and the teacher would have to give a class on how to use the smartboard.

  9. Kaitlyn,
When I was in school I remember the projectors being used for alot of things. Most of the time I would find myself dozing off because it was so boring. I think smartboards are the way to go to keep the students actively involved. I also believe the kindle wil be useful to many college students, because then they wouldn't have to go find all these expensive books and could just load the books onto their Kindle. Your teacher sounds very boring, teaching off of a powerpoint is no way to teach. That could hinder most students from learning anything because they are bored or they just don't understand what the teacher is teaching.

  10. kamille,
i also agree that having smartboards in the classroom is extremely effective. my teachers used it in our classrooms and they were very effective in our learning process. it was unfortunate when they didnt use it or didnt know how to because it took longer for the teacher to explain, rather then just flying through the lesson

  11. i think that kindles are going to be very useful in the classroom. wether the students pay for it or the classroom provides them, it will be easy for the students read. they can keep all of there books on one kindle and not misplace anything
with smartboards its also very useful in the classroom. the teachers can either sit at their desk or use a stylus to draw on the board. it is also easier for the students to understand because they are becoming more technologically advanced as each generation passes by

  12. I was so jealous when I was in high school using projectors and good old blackboards, when my mom, who is a 7th grade teacher, has a smart-board! Schools should definately switch over to them, as long as they educate the teachers how to use them. The worst classes consisted of a teacher not being able to even pull up their power points. I hated when teachers were supposed to be teaching, but they were too preoccupied figuring out their technology. Technology in the classroom can be very positive, though, because let's face it, that is all children, teens and adults revolve around. Technology runs our world. If teachers can learn to apply technology into their lessons, it would engage the kids even more, because they are interested in technology.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Chris,
I agree with you about the kindles. I think it would be very beneficial for students. They would have exactly what they needed with them. Again, all of the technology would help in the classroom as long as teachers and students know how to use it!!

  14. I was lucky enough to attend a school where technology was really important. All the classrooms had a cart of laptops and the could get new computers for themselves. The teachers could go to these classes where they learn how to use the new technology like a smart board or a new computer and then they would get one set up in their classroom. I believe that this was an effective way of getting technology in the classroom because it ensure that the teachers have some background knowledge of the technology so they are able to use it effectively.
I also like the idea of using kindles for students. I believe that using the kindles would take the burden off of students. I also believe that students would benefit from kindles because they would not have to carry around all the books in their backpacks. It would actually help out with the back problems kids deal with because of all the weight in their backpacks. It would be something that students and teachers would have to get used to, but i believe it would be a great change.

  15. Rebecca,
I agree with the fact that maybe right now it would be difficult for everyone to be able to buy a kindle, but once the prices go down then there should really be no excuse for students to have one. i think it would be more beneficial for high school and college students to have rather than elementary and middle school students.

  16. I especially enjoyed the videos about the smartboards. It seems as thought the students are more engaged in the material, while utilizing the smartboard. It was also good to know that a teacher can reach all learning types with the smartboard. And studnets with special needs can use the smartboard to enhance their learning as well. It was nice to hear that the smartboard can be used throughout the day in many of the lessons and activities.
I think the invention of the Amazon Kindle was a great idea. So many times, to myself and when I cadet taught, students would lose a book, or it would get ruined and they would have to replace it. Now, with the Amazon Kindle, that is less likely to happen.

  17. Hey Danielle,
I agree. I was the same way. My schools were, for lack of words, more technologically advanced than some others. And i appreciated our use of smartboards and projectors. We also had a game device we used on the smartboards. Everyone who participated had a remote with ABCDE and when the question came up on the Smartboard, you responded and it kept score. It was a competitive game that helped review for tests.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with Jaclyn Barks with how useing the videos in the classroom. It can be expensive to put smartboards in each classroom, but as a student i hated havein gto sitt there and listen to the teacher lecture on and on. there is games that you can use on them to help understand the material such as a hands on approch. It might be more expensive to do upfront but if it helps rase map-test score then thats more money for the school.

  19. Just like most of you, I also enjoyed watching the videos of the smartboards. I find it very interesting how technology is evolving in ways that we wouldn't have ever imagined. I always wonder what will technology bring us in the future. I believe that technology in a classroom is very important because everyone has to catch up with new technology. And things will just get easier. I think Amazon Kindles are great, however I believe it will take a lot of time for those to replace regular textbooks in a school because they are very expensive.
A teacher can effectively use technology with the simple use of a power point presentation. It helps me better understand the class.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It seems like I am the only one who had never heard of Smartboard before watching those videos, and I guess it's because we don't have Smartboards in France! I am so amazed! You can do so many things with those "magic board", and it seems like it really help the children focusing during the class. But at the same time I am wondering if all the new technologies are not going to make books diseapeared? I think it would be great to have electronic handbooks to use in class but I would not be a big fan of having electronic reading books. I think that a book has a story to tell but has also a story and a life itself that should not be forgotten. Using computers in almost every class is something new for me, because in my home country we still use our old books, notebooks and pen to study in class, but I think it helps students focusing and it that it is also great for the environment!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Danielle, you are indeed very lucky to have attended a school where they gave technology a lot if importance. I come from a school where we would have a computer class once a week and that was it. Very few times we would have a teacher giving a class with the use of technology. Now that I am here at Lindenwood I realized how important it is for teachers to be updated when it comes to technology. I agree with you that Kindles will help students in a near future.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Danielle, I am glad to hear that in your school teachers were taught how to use those new technologies, because Smartboard and all the new technologies can be really helpful to the classroom as long as the teachers know how to use them! I also follow you saying that the Amazon kindle would be a great solution to heavy bagpacks!

  23. I think smartboards are definitely going to take over the classroom. They are so much more useful than a regular blackboard or dry erase board! You can do everything all in one place, and even transcribe what you have done into written notes. As for the Amazon Kindle, I don't think it will catch on in classrooms very quickly. It is very expensive, and many schools will not be able to afford it. It is a great tool for personal use though! Twitter and social networking is definitely catching on in the classroom! I can definitely see in the future using social networking sites in the classroom to ensure my students stay engaged and involved in the material!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Elise,
Smartboards are definitely amazing! And i completely agree with you about the Kindle or any other electronic book. Students should be able to physically feel the book, and turn the pages because it will mean so much more to them in the long run! And i also agree about using more computers in classrooms. The students definitely stay more involved in lessons when they can use technology they can easily relate to!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the smartboard is another way they are advancing technology. I think that it is smart how they are combining computers and blackboards a easier way to communicate in class. I looked at the kindle a while back I thought it was cool any book you wanted right at your hand, but it was a little to expensive. I bet in a couple years it will be cheaper. I went to Harris Stowe before Lindenwood and they have smartboard it was pretty neat the different ways you can use it.

  26. Hi Ashley
I agree that soon the smartboards will take over the class room in a couple years becasue it is easier to use and the price would have probably went down by then. As far as the kindle I think it is great for personal use. as will save some people alot of money in the future.

  27. Technology can be an asset in the classroom however technology can make some teachers lazy and if they just want to show you a million slides in one class it can be very boring and ineffective. if the teacher is creative they can really be helpful and really let students get in to the lesson. I support technology but continue to be creative as well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I thought the videos were interesting. The Smartboards make teaching look a lot more fun, as long as the teacher likes using technology for lectures. It would be hard for a teacher that has been teaching for 40 years, to stop what they are doing, and to learn a completely different teaching style. Technology has grew and teachers have to stay on top of it because students are getting more involved with technology everyday. I think the Amazon Kindle will benefit us in the future because it will be less expensive to download a book, then to buy a brand new book off the shelf. Students will be more motivated to read, since all the books are in one place. My teacher from my Technology for Teachers class was very effective with technology. She helped me learn how to make better Powerpoints and to make effective lesson plans on the computer.

  29. Hello Ashley,
You have a great point about the price of technology. I don't think that a lot of schools have enough money to provide technology in the classroom but hopefully as technology develops they will become more accesible for all schools.

  30. Technolgy is changing everyday but I do not think that all schools will be able to keep up with the demands of technolgy. The smartboards were interesting to see what is coming out next for our children. Technolgy will more than likely take over the classroom. But I kinda think it will make education impersonal; if the children can get their education from social networking and do everything online then what is the point of having to come to class. The amazon kindle I think is a hand held computer for books. It's good to be able to read what you want, when you want without having to go get the book. But, I do think it's a little much for the classrooms.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Derald I agree with you. If we as teacher just use technolgy for our classroom then not only will the teacher become lazy but so will the students. Our students spend enough time in front of the computer or gaming system. We need to encourage them to walk to the libary and read under a tree some where.

  32. Hello everyone! Technology in the classroom is important because it helps engage the student and its all around us. I have used a lot of the technology like the smartbroads and clickers in my high school but never thought that it would be that benifical for younger students. After watching the youtube clips I found that students of all ages benefit from using the technology. I think that the kindle will be a little weird to get use to at first but in the end will be more inexpensive compared to text books. An effective use of technology in the classroom is by using the clickers to take quizzes or comprehension of the subject. This is an effective use of the technology because students must participate and the teacher can gage the students learning and address misunderstood material.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Kamille that teachers must know how to use the technology. My highschool had one smartboard for every department. The smartboards often sat in the corner and weren't use. I think it would be cool to use them in the way intended

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't think the amazon kindle will catch on. For one thing it is very expensive. Also many people like myself like to take notes, mark pages, and post-it many of the pages. Having a book in hand makes it much easier to find stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey Brittany,
I agree that the move towards the kindle will help reduce price with textbooks. And technology to help grab students attention is important because it's all around us. Learning to make power points is crucial because students make plenty throughout their education.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe that most technology is good for the class room. The smart board and the Amazon kindle would for sure be a couple of those things: Things like PDA’s and laptops could potentially make for a big distraction in the class room though. The Amazon Kindle is super cool. One of my friend’s dads has something similar and he really likes having all his favorite books in one place. This technology could potential make textbooks obsolete. I think that kindergarten teacher used the smart board in a very useful way that was beneficial for the children.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Im spot on with tiffany. I wish my high school would have used more technology in the class room so I would not be having to figure all this out now and have some sort of basis.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Courtney,
I agree with students being more engaged in the material by using Smartboards. I never thought about the students with special needs using Smartboards, but I agree that it will enhance their learnings too.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think technology in the classroom can be very useful because it visually presents information. Visual learning is the most important learning especially for young children in getting and keeping their attention. Kindle in the classroom is a great way to start a new technique of teaching. I believe it will grasp more students attention and also like what other people had said that it could really save some money. I think classes on demonstrating teachers on how to use power points is important because students do find it easier to learn something visually. Schools are always discussing and talking about how to improve children's learning abilities and i think technology is a great path to start down.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey Casey Lewis, i can agree with your laptop comment because my highschool provided everyone with a laptop and it was a big distraction, by my senior year we had so many restrictions and limitations for our laptops in the classroom that they became pointless. But, it did save alot of mony on text books because we were able to download our text books online.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The chapter in the book was full of interesting information. I was a little disheartened to read that some teaching positions require you to be a part of a union in the contract. I was also amazed at the statistics regarding the percentage of women teachers, 75% through out the US. I think this is a sad truth. We need more male teachers, especially for the young boys growing up, and for children who might not have a father or a good male role model in their home.
I was also intrigued by the technology videos. Being older than many of my fellow students, I never used a Smartboard, and didn't even hear of such a thing till I entered college 2.5 years ago. My children haven't used them either, but they have used the clickers and have really enjoyed them. I think they are great teaching tools.
Both of my music instructors at my previous college used the internet often in class. This made the material so much easier to grasp. I think technology is critical to student success in today's society.
The Amazon Kindle is a really neat concept too. It would be nice to have all of my text books in one locations. This would eliminate physical stress (from the weight), simplify getting ready for school, and make my reading assignments much more accessible for me at any time. I love this concept! :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I found the videos to be very interesting. In my high school, every classroom had a smart board and they were used in every class mostly for showing power points or for notes so they could be uploaded to the internet. I think it will be a while before the Kindle will enter the classroom but I definitely think that it is the future of textbooks. I find technology very helpful in the classroom especially when you miss class so you can get the information very easily.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In response to Rebecca VanOrder's comment about falling asleep during the projector use. lol... We had the kind that the teacher used the films that your write on. Very hard on the eyes, made you tired just to look at it. I often went home with a headache. Not too mention, I too fell asleep and I was a good student. This technology can and is really making a huge difference in teaching and learning! I love it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think it is amazing how advanced technology is now, however I feel like some things are unnecessary when it comes to teaching and learning. The smartboard is pretty cool, but a lot of my teachers could never figure out how to use it. They would waste like half the class period trying to make it work. I guess it would be different if my teachers were good at using it. My opinion might change once I have to use this technology. The Amazon Kindle is impressive but expensive so I do not think it will be used anytime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Nick,
I do agree with you that technology makes it easier to catch up if you miss school. I like pc common at Lindenwood because you can look up all the homework and reviews. It is easy to print things off if you need them and I like the advantage of being able to get power points, which mean less note taking.

    ReplyDelete
  46. i actually saw a smartboard for the firsst time not to long ago in my daughters classroom at hschool. i wassss amazed by how it worked. i think every class should have one so the kids can work with them. the technology it shows it just amazing and the kidss can interect with what the teacher is doing as well. now in my daughters class each student has their own laptop they use(in first grade) and the smartboard really helps the kids with following along with the teacher when she or he is doing lessons with the computer. this way the kids dont have to try to see what she is doing off a little screen on her desk.

  47. becca

i agree with you on what you say about how some teacher dont use the stuff cuz they cant figure it out. i think if a school is going to use the new technology then it should not be introduced untill every teacher have sufficiant training on them and know how to use them properly. if not then not only are the teachers confused but the students even more

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think the video was very informative and showed a lot about the technology today, and its growth in the future. I believe Smartboards are a great way to get the students to interact and keep their attention. But I have a had them in classrooms before and most of the teachers never used them. I think teachers should be trained more on them and I think it would be a useful tool in the classroom. I also think that Kindle is a great idea for high school students, but I also feel they should still have an option for getting a textbook also. For some people they like to have the book infront of them when they are studying.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Eric Lewis,
I also agree with you. I didn't realized such young kids had laptops for daily work at school. I think that type of technology will really help them in the future. I think more school shoud introduce that type of interaction with technology as early as your daughters school.

  50. I really enjoyed the video on youtube about the smart board. It's so crazy because just last week I went to my first day of my practicum and the teacher I observed had a smart board in both of her classes. I had never actually seen one until then and I was pretty impressed with everything she could do. I do believe it will be a while before all classrooms have one as they are quite expensive. I was pretty amazed that the school I went to had them because of it's rural location. I figured expensive equipment would be few and far between at that school. Guess not. Either way it's quite a step up from what I had in high school which was simple overhead projectors.

  51. Hey courtney,
I thought I would say add on about the remote idea you were talking about with the ABCDE function... They're great but they cost a little bit of money and the students only used them once. I guess they're kind of like a book but a least with a book you can get a lifetime of use out of them. With the remote you use it one semester and then never again. What a waste. Cant teachers just do quizes the same way we always have?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I thought the Twitter video was pretty interesting. It said technology used outside of the classroom can be used to present information in a way that students can relate to, and I wholeheartedly agree. Students must be taught in other ways, due to an advance in social networking and the ease that some obtain it.

  53. Technology is a wonderfull tool that has the power to enhance our students learning curve many times over and in rapid succession By not only fostering to the visual and students but to the audastic students as well. For example the smartboard technology that is being used in classrooms in this day and age provides for every type of learning. The smart borad combines the the trifecta of learning styles visual, audio, and hands on.
